REPUBLIC OF PERILO NATIONAL RAILWAY

The National Railway of the Republic of Perilo provides rail passenger and freight service as a part of the national transportation system of the country.  The railroad is constructed on the 1067 mm Cape Gauge standard.  In 2005 the National railway transported 100,000 tons of freight; passengers rode 90,000,000 passenger kilometers.

Much of the National Railway's equipment is old, although well maintained in the railroad's shops at Company Shops.  The east-west mainline of the Intracontinental Railroad (a multinational effort to build a common transportation system) has heavy rail and upgraded roadbed needed to support high speed passenger operations.  However, the rails used on the Northern and Southern Divisions are lighter weight (in some cases as light as 36 pound rail) and the roadbed historically has not been as well maintained as might be desired.  In 2004 the National Railway initiated a track upgrade project, and work is currently progressing to bring the Georgetown to Glencoe line up to a modern standard.

The National Railway Dispatch Center, located at Company Shops, provides centralized dispatch and traffic control functions for both Divisions.  A central teletype system provides message distribution to all control towers and stations, and the National Railway Radio System provides communications along the tracks throughout the system.  In addition, a telegraph system links all stations and control towers and remains in regular daily use for passing train orders and other communications using Railroad Morse Code.
