PERILO DEMOGRAPHICS
RACIAL AND ETHNIC GROUPS
The following racial and ethnic groups are
identified by the census:
- European White - including settlers from
the prior colonial powers, England, France, Spain, and the Netherlands.
- Indigenous Peoples - descendents of the
Ossippee (still resident in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain) and Smoke Valley
peoples (still resident along the north side of the Northern Massif, the
Valley of Smoke, and the Sangre de Cristo mountains). Several small
aboriginal tribes maintain traditional civilizations in the Great Forest,
and the Totem people still maintain a nomadic existence in the Great Waste.
- African-Perilan - black African peoples
brought to Perilo as slaves in the 1600s and 1700s.
- Tri-Racial - people of mixed ancestry.
Small, old communities of tri-racial peoples which may have originated in
the late 1600s and early 1700s are located in the Northern Massif region.
- Asian Pacific - largely refugees from
conflict in Southeast Asia who arrived subsequent to 1973. Settlement
has primarily been along the coast.
- South Asian - professional and commercial
immigrants from Pakistan and India who have settled in the major cities.
