Summary: A magnitude 4.2 earthquake on Straight Drift caused the collapse of part of one wall of the open pit mine operated by the International Borax Company south of Carson Wells.
Level of Effort: Six ministries and two non-governmental agencies responded to the incident with rescue resources being provided by air, highway, and rail. Two hospitals received casualties.
Outcome: Incident controlled on 7 July. Recovery and investigation initiated on 8 July. A total of 29 miners were killed and 22 injured.
Closed: 2007-07-08 as national incident.
